Example #1: Virginia City

Virginia City, now a celebrated ghost town, was once a gold rush boom town after rich placer gold deposits were discovered along Alder Gulch. Before statehood, Virginia City was Montana’s territorial capital from 1865 to 1875 . Walk the wooden boardwalks and peer through the shop windows for a look back in time. Enjoy old fashioned hand churned ice cream, visit boot hill cemetery where vigilantes killed and buried some of Montana’s most notorious characters. Pan for gold and garnets along the creeks and roadsides, belly up to the bar and have a cold one at Montana’s oldest saloon, The Bale of Hay Saloon in Virginia City.

Example #2: Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park

This is one of the biggest limestone caverns in the west. It was designated Montana’s first State Park, established in 1938. Experience the incredible rock formations deep underground, and see (or not see) a moment of total darkness! This mysterious and secluded landmark is a must see for the whole family. Located west of Bozeman along the Jefferson River in Madison county, the country surrounding the caverns is Big Sky Country at its best. A 30 minute walk from the visitor center and parking lot, the tour is 2 miles in distance and takes 2 hours.

Example #3: Butte

Want to see the “Real Montana”? At the heart of Gold West Country is the quintessential American mining city of Butte “the richest hill on earth”, one of the largest copper boomtowns in the American West. Buttes uptown historic district has the most resources of any historic district in the United States with close to 6000 listed properties. Once one of the worlds richest cities, Buttes mining wealth is reflected in its incredible downtown architecture. Understand Buttes role in the fight between capital and labor, the early struggle for mining safety, union solidarity and modern environmental justice. This day is a nostalgic trip back to the late 19th and early 20th century. Visit the world museum of mining, the old jail, the Rookwood speakeasy, antique shops, the oldest continuously run Chinese restaurant in America, the Peking Noodle Parlor, the Dumas brothel, The Mai Wah Chinese Heritage building, the M&M Cigar Store, the Hennessy Building, the Finlen Hotel, the Berkley Pit, and the list goes on!  Lewis and Clark Caverns and Butte can be visited in one day.

Example #4: Madison Buffalo Jump State Park

A semicircular canyon cliff used by Native Americans as a Buffalo Jump, where herds of Bison were stampeded over the cliff as a means of slaughter. Atop the cliff are remains of tipi rings, stone weights in a circular pattern left from Native American encampments.
